LAST DIM SUM IN SINGAPORE
America's most unwanted landscape.
Singapore is one of the smallest countries in the world, yet it ranks fourth in GDP per capita. Most Americans do not know where it is, probably because it lies exactly halfway around the world, as far away from the United States as possible.
Singapore is a nation where young girls and old ladies can walk in the streets at night, where the young are not preyed upon by drug peddlers, where the sidewalks are clean of gum, spit, and litter, and where slums and poverty do not exist. Yet, it has been called an Orwellian state governed by authoritarian leaders and stifling laws. It harbors magnificent Western architecture, a spectacular economy, and a standard of living envied by the third world. Yet, art plays an insignificant role in its culture.

About Richard Barone
I was a great artist in the fifth grade, at least that�s what my fellow classmates and art teacher thought. My parents thought differently, however, and transferred me to a Catholic school, and that was the end of my art career. By the time I got to college, I was convinced that the intellectual search for truth was far superior to the aesthetic. I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and hadn�t taken one course in art. None were offered, even though the college professed the "liberal arts." In a sense, I was on the same course as Robert Motherwell (philosopher to artist), but for me the end came in the jungles of Vietnam. Philosophy and everything that I had learned�all the teachers, priests, and professors�had deserted me. Except...

Thank you. The Botanical Garden in Singapore is the last refuge in a city-state that is very hi-tech. I hope the pollution and smog don't affect it.

Thank you. I wanted to show in an analogous way that eloquent art transcends common skills and understanding, just as eloquent architecture transcends common life in Singapore. Something like Leonardo did with the Last Supper.
